Agency Overview
The Virginia Department of Energy leads the Commonwealth to a reliable and responsible energy future. The agency's team of inspectors, engineering staff, technical experts, and trainers work together with the purpose of making service to mining, energy, and mineral resources industries more efficient while maintaining worker safety as the agency's top priority.
Through permitting, inspections, operator assistance, training activities, and promotion of resource conservation practices, the Virginia Department of Energy promotes environmentally sound mining, gas and oil, and mineral mining industries throughout the Commonwealth.
ENERGY Program Areas
Mined Land Repurposing - CSMO/NPDES Permits
Mined Land Repurposing is responsible for ensuring the reclamation of land affected by surface and underground coal mining activity. They oversee the technical review and issuance of Coal Surface Mining Operation (CSMO) permits and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits.
Gas and Oil
Gas and Oil's responsibilities include regulating the effects of gas and oil operations both on and below the surface, issuing permits, client assistance programs, inspection of well sites and gathering pipelines, reclamation of abandoned well sites, protection of correlative rights, and promotion of resource conservation practices.
Mineral Mining
Mineral Mining provides for the safe and environmentally sound production of Virginia's non-fuel minerals. The program administers both health and safety and surface mining reclamation regulatory programs for all non-coal mineral mining operations.
