Agency Overview
DCR is Virginia’s regulatory authority ensuring that Virginia’s dams have proper and safe design, construction, operation and maintenance to protect public safety.
Unless specifically excluded, all dams in Virginia are regulated. More than 2,500 dams are regulated in the state.
Dams in Virginia are classified by hazard potential - high, significant or low. Classification may change according to how a given dam's failure might affect lives and property downstream.
Permit Application Fee Form for Construction, but not Alteration
Alteration Permit
Any application form submitted pursuant to 4VAC50-20-80 for permitting a proposed impounding structure alteration does not require a payment.
Construction Permit Application Fee
Any application form submitted pursuant to 4VAC50-20-70 for permitting a proposed impounding structure construction shall be accompanied by a payment as shown on the form.
